June 2010

Here’s an update (as of April 2010)  from the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve of the nesting birds from this spring as reported by  dedicated volunteer Shirley Murphy.

SEAL BEND ROOKERY:  there are 10 Great Blue Heron and 4 Great Egret nests as of March 23rd.

RAPTORS: there are 2 confirmed Red-tailed Hawk nests and 5 of the 6 Barn Owl boxes are being used; one box is being used by a Great Horned Owl, which is a first here at the reserve.

BIRD BOXES: This figure changes daily so as of March 24th we have 14 definite and 5 possible nests already in action. At least 5 boxes have eggs already and two boxes have completed their clutch and have started incubating.

(Titmice are at work in box outside docent den window – Tricia)

WHITE-TAILED KITES:  we have three pairs staying in one place long enough to confirm breeding even though we cannot pinpoint the actual nest.

Below is a list of the bird sightings from the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve as reported by the many dedicated volunteers…
